Apparently, leeks are embedded in Welsh culture, likely stemming from the legend that soldiers would wear the vegetable in their hats to differentiate their allies from their enemies. Imagine someone today running around with a leek in their hat.

You would never know that the pepper we sprinkle in almost every dish starts out looking like a bunch of tiny grapes. However, once those are dried, they resemble the black peppercorns we are more familiar with. Black pepper is surprisingly a fruit.
The black pepper fruits are picked when they are green to produce black pepper, and the slightly riper ones produce white pepper. We would never think that these grape-like fruits would make us sneeze uncontrollably.
